Rebuilding the 'Lost' Classic - The Jaguar XKSS

Jaguar’s expert classic craftsmen have rebuilt the first genuine Jaguar XKSS in almost 60 years. Jaguar announced in early 2016 that their Classic division would rebuild nine of their ‘lost’ XKSS sports cars for a select number of Jaguar collectors and enthusiasts.

The Jaguar XKSS is argued to be the worlds first ever supercar and was originally made to be a road-going version of the Le Mans-winning 1950’s Jaguar D-type. In 1957 a number XKSS models were built at the Jaguar Browns Lane Factory in the British Midlands but unfortunately nine of the built models that were set for export to North America were lost in a fire.

The first re-build of the ‘new original’ which has been created to match the exact specification of the 1957 build was given its debut at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles on 17th November 2016. This build was a result of 18 months of research and was re-drafted from a combination of modern technology and original drawings from Jaguar’s archives. The successful build is now acting as a blueprint from which the other nine cars will be built.

Kev Riches, Jaguar’s Classic Engineering Manager, commented on the builds: The XKSS is one of the most important cars in Jaguar’s history, and we are committed to making the ‘new original’ version absolutely faithful to the period car in every way. From the number, type and position of all the rivets used – there are more than 2,000 in total – to the Smiths gauges on the dashboard, everything is the same as the original cars, be-cause that is the way it should be.”

The nine re-builds are to be hand-built in the UK and sent to customers across the globe this year. It is thought that 10,000 man hours will go into building just one of the new XKSS models and that all nine cars are to be sold at a price in excess of £1million each.

Director of Jaguar Land Rover, Tim Hanning described the XKSS rebuild as a representation of Jaguar Land Rover Classics ‘world-class expertise’ and commitment to their ‘passion and enthusiasm for Jaguar’s illustrious past.’
