The DBZ Centenary Collection

The legendary Italian design house, Zagato, celebrates its centenary next year, in 2019. For 58 of those 100 years, Zagato has enjoyed a remarkable creative partnership with Aston Martin. Over that time, the two iconic brands have developed some of the world’s most desirable vehicles, from the very first DB4 GT Zagato to the most recent Vanquich Zagato Shooting Brake. In commemoration of their long-standing partnership and Zagato’s milestone centenary, the pair are creating something truly unique that pays tribute to the original DB4 GT Zagato icon by creating a classic of the future.

The build run is strictly limited to only 19 pairs of exceptional vehicles. The duo comprises of a new road-legal DBS GT Zagato and a new, track only DB4 GT Zagato Continuation. The DB4 GT Zagato will be built in the original home of the DB4, at Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell, while the DBS GT Zagato will be built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon. The DBZ Centenary Collection will be sure to take a place amongst the most coveted and stimulating cars in the world.

Andy Palmer, Aston Martin’s Chief Executive Officer, commented: “The partnership between Aston Martin and Zagato is one of the most fruitful and enduring in the automotive world. With Zagato celebrating its centenary next year, what better way to celebrate this landmark - and the long-standing bond between our two great companies - than creating these 19 pairs of cars. As an engineer I would always say my favourite Aston Martin is the next one, but I have to say I’m struggling to think of a finer two-car garage than this!”

The original DB4 GT Zagato was a thoroughbred machine, built to race against the pure power of Ferrari in the 1960’s. Created to withstand the rigours or motor racing and blessed with break taking beauty, just 19 were built. Hence why only 19 pairs of these outstanding vehicles are being produced. The DBZ Centenary Collection has been designed and will be built with the unrivalled knowledge and expertise of Aston Martin Works, continuing the authenticity and meticulous craftsmanship of the original Zagato bodied DB4 GTs manufactured by Zagato and Aston Martin in 1960 whilst sympathetically integrating modern engineering advancements and performance enhancements.

Andrea Zagato, head of the Milan-based design house that was founded by his grandfather in 1919, said: “Great Britain has always appreciated our work. In particular, I must say I’m honoured and very proud that Aston Martin has chosen to celebrate our long-standing partnership with this unique DBZ Centenary Collection.”

Beneath the bonnet of the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation is a version of the celebrated straight-six-cylinder Tadek Marek-designed engine. The engine has two spark plugs per cylinder and transmits its 380bhp to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential to deliver an authentic and unforgettable driving experience.

Managing Director at Aston Martin Works, Paul Spires, had this to say of the DB4 GT Zagato: “It has been my pleasure and privilege to oversee many exceptional projects here at Aston Martin Works, but creating nineteen DB4 GT Zagato Continuations as one half of the DBZ Centenary Collection is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We will bring all our hand-craftsmanship and expertise to bear in building these nineteen Continuation cars, sympathetically incorporating the very latest engineering advancements and performance enhancements but remaining true to the purity and authenticity of the original design”.

The road-legal half of the DBZ Centenary Collection is based on the brand-new DBS Superleggera and is designed to embody the next evolution of Aston Martin Zagato design language. The vehicle is characterised by a new, fresh interpretation of the iconic double-bubble roof. The striking front-grille and dramatic tail of the DBS GT Zagato offers an amplified silhouette with unmistakable presence. The DBS GT Zagato will be the rarest of all modern-era Aston Martin Zagatos.

Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer, added: “Aston Martin and Zagato is a uniquely dynamic union. One that unites the former’s love of proportion and clean, simple forms with the latter’s daring and maverick eye. Never afraid to push the boundaries, the partnership has resulted in some fabulous cars. Most recently the quartet of Vanquish Zagatos, which spanned the extremes of design expression with Coupe, Roadster, Speedster and Shooting Brake versions. However, Zagato’s centenary demanded something extra special, and the Zagato Collection is just that: One car that pays tribute to a timeless icon; another that writes a fearless new chapter for future generations to admire.”

The DBZ Centenary Collection will be priced at £6m plus taxes and first deliveries will commence at the end of 2019 for the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation and the start of 2020 for the DBS GT Zagato.
