Family-friendly binaural podcast series
3D sounds to encourage adventurers of all ages
Experience the British outdoors with Land Rover
On 21st September 2017, Land Rover launched a family-friendly binaural podcast series, a first for the company, titled 'Discovery Adventures'. The podcast uses 3D sound to create an immersive experience for people of all ages to be inspired to go adventuring in the British countryside in a car, whatever the weather. The series hopes to reignite the adventurous reputation of Land Rover, echoing the company ethos to explore away from the beaten track and discover.
Dr Jessica Pitt conducted a study this year into the car as a shared place for family bonding, as a car journey offers the ideal time and space for families to spend quality time together. This space is important for families and can even depend of the configuration of seats. Dr. Pitt's studies are the basis of Land Rover seeing the value their cars can offer customers, and how a podcast can enhance it.
Gareth Fry, triple Olivier award-winning sound designer, is using binaural recording to create a unique listening experience for the series, by capturing outstanding 360 degree sound in various UK locations.
EXPERIENCE THE DISCOVERY PODCAST
"Binaural sound describes the way we, as human beings, perceive sound. Recording binaurally on-location gives us a real sense of panorama, of landscape and our place within it, because binaural microphones pick up everything around us. So it really allows us to imagine we're part of the story, in the heart of the action. To feel like we're actually experiencing the places we visit on our adventures."

The 'Discovery Adventures' podcast series promises a fusion of fact and fiction, with unique and renowned outdoor experts and authentic national treasures, including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Ben Ainslie, Chris Packham and Kate Silverton. Stories will be based on specific locations across the UK, offering an exhilarating and immersive journey for the listeners. Podcasts are designed in the first instance as a in-car experience, but people can also listen on-the-go wherever they are.
For seven weeks starting from 21st September, the next episode of the podcast series will be released on Thursdays. The series is being distributed by podcast experts ACAST. The first episode, which launched on the 21st, is set in the Natural History Museum in London. The start of the series features a child named Sam, his uncle and his dog, Rover, who work to discover who is behind UK-wide GPD disruptions. Sam's adventures take us across some of Britain's most beautiful locations. Bringing the listener into the story, they play the role of Sam to decipher the modern mystery with the help of experts along the way.
"We wanted to create a shareable family experience that encouraged adventure and interest in the Great British landscape whilst serving as a great reminder that the real world can be more exciting than the virtual one. Research shows that the car is a unique environment, a place of reduced distractions that allows for important quality time, and we're hoping to encourage families and adventurers of all ages to make the most of this time together to go on a car adventure with a difference and discovery something new."
