The autonomous Range Rover Sport successfully navigated its way around Coventry Ring Road.

A prototype self-driving Range Rover Sport recently completed its first ever lap around one of the UK's most challenging roads. The vehicle managed to handle junctions, slip roads and lane changes all autonomously at its 40mph speed limit.
The exciting trials are part of a £20 million government-funded UK Autodrive project, which ends this month after a three-year programme. Jaguar Land Rover engineers have completed various self-driving technology tests on closed tracks before heading onto public roads in Milton Keynes and Coventry. Their plan is to make self-driving vehicles a reality for customers within just 10 years.
The Range Rover Sport was chosen for these real-road tests because of its existing safety technology such as Adaptive Cruise Control. The autonomous vehicle has been fitted with additional features such as navigation sensors, RADAR and LIDAR. The model can sucessfully handle parking, roundabouts, traffic lights, pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles, all whilst driving on complicated roads.
"The Coventry Ring Road is known for its complicated slip roads and exits. It makes for very challenging conditions, especially when under pressure in the rush hour. Our self-driving car is not impacted by the same pressure, frustrations or fatigue that a driver may experience and so it’s capable of turning a potentially very stressful situation into a completely stress-free one."

This UK Autodrive project has helped to accelerate Jaguar Land Rover's development of self-driving and connected technology, strengthening the Midlands' position as a hub of innovation. Their vision is to create the most capable self-driving vehicles on the road, on the widest range of terrain and weather conditions, giving customers the choice of resuming control if needed.
