The new 2020 McLaren MCL35 F1 Car
21 Grands Prix are now confirmed for the 2020 F1 World Championship, after the Shanghai GP which was scheduled for April 19 was postponed in China due to the spread of the Coronavirus. The race is still under contract to run in 2020, but is so far without a confirmed date - This year twenty of the world’s most talented racing drivers will contest the F1 World Drivers Championship, with Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton bidding for a record-equalling seventh crown. Another driver’s championship would see Hamilton draw level with the record currently held by the legendary former Benetton and Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher. Ten teams will compete for the coveted Formula One World Constructors' Championship during 2020 and the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne will kick-off the new F1 season on 15 March.

McLaren, as it is known today, was founded by New Zealand F1 driver Bruce McLaren in 1963. The race team he formed, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd, made its Grand Prix debut at the 1966 Monaco GP, and went on to become one of the most successful teams in F1. Winning eight World Constructors' titles & 12 World Drivers' Championships, with over 160 Grand Prix victories to date - McLaren cars also dominated CanAm sports car racing with 56 race wins from 1967 to 1972, including five CanAm Constructors' Championships along the way. Many of them with Bruce McLaren himself behind the wheel!

McLaren have also won the celebrated Indianapolis 500 three times and famously won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, the story of which remains one of the great legends of endurance racing at La Sarthe. Even now, nearly twenty-five years later the significance of what happened during those 24 hours remains truly remarkable, and the winning car is still the foundation of all McLaren road going supercars built at the factory in Surrey today.
From left to right – James Hunt, Niki Lauda & Bernie Ecclestone
The legacy of McLaren F1 was firmly established in 1976 by the late British driver James Hunt, who beat Ferrari's Niki Lauda by just one point to secure the drivers' championship after one of the sport’s most terrifying crashes which almost claimed the life of the Austrian driver Niki Lauda. The 1976 season to this day remains one of the most talked about episodes of F1 history - The nineteen eighties was undoubtably the ‘Golden Era’ for McLaren in F1 with successes for drivers Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and arguably the best of them all, Ayrton Senna, under team principal Ron Dennis.
Ayrton Senna joined Alain Prost at McLaren in 1988 and they had a series of controversial clashes, including at the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix that gave Prost his third Drivers' Championship.
After this period of unrivalled dominance McLaren had to wait till the 1998 season to win their next titles in F1, with Finnish driver Mika Hakkinen, who retained the drivers' crown again in 1999. In 2008 Lewis Hamilton brought the team their next drivers' championship and the following year Ron Dennis stepped down as team principal to make way for Martin Whitmarsh who signed reigning world champion Jenson Button for 2010, forming an all-British driver line-up with Lewis Hamilton.
2020 McLaren Drivers - Lando Norris & Carlos Sainz
Drivers Lando Norris & Carlos Sainz, both heading into their second season with McLaren, will be racing the new MCL35 as they look to build on last year's credible fourth place in the Formula One World Constructors Championship - The MCL35 continues to sport the striking McLaren papaya and blue, the original colours chosen by founder Bruce McLaren and representing the team’s 57-year legacy in the sport. The dynamic new livery is the essence of form and function; designed to further increase stand-out on the grid while being fully optimised for racing performance.
Under current team principal Andreas Seidl, the Woking based McLaren engineers began work on the MCL35 which is powered by the Renault E-Tech 20 engine during the 2019 season. This provided valuable development insights for the new car in what will be an intensely competitive 2020 season. The new car is scheduled to begin official pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona in Catalunya, Spain from 19th to 21st February, then again from 26th to 28th February where Carlos & Lando are expected to share the driving duties.
