With the launch of the new Land Rover Defender in the near future, a new sneak peak of the re-imagined 4X4 have been released to mark the 71st anniversary of the original Defender, launched at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show. The Defender prototype is currently undergoing rigorous testing ahead of its launch in 2020.
Land Rover revealed images of the test vehicle being put to the test in multiple off-road environments, from the freezing temperatures of the Arctic to the extreme heat of the desert, as well as intense off-road terrain. Though the Defender silhouette is wrapped in camouflage to save the final appearance for the official launch, the design elements of the iconic Defender are clearly present. The rear mounted spare wheel seen on the test vehicle is an unmistakable feature in the Defender genes.
Land Rover has donated a Defender prototype to the non-profit Tusk Trust elephant protection organisation. The trust will put the vehicle to the test in real-life situations, testing the vehicle across a 14,000 hectare reserve in Kenya - transporting heavy supplies on rough terrain. This will give the Defender a more realistic testing ground in comparison to the stringent testing it is put through before being launched.
With the previous Defender being taken off the production line in 2016, the anticipation for the new Defender has been building progressively. With the classic design features staying at the centre of focus for the new Defender, it is clear Land Rover are keen to stay in keeping with the heritage of the brand, whilst still modernising the iconic model.
“If we had wanted to recreate the existing car then we could have moved quicker, but it is our view that for an icon to remain an icon it cannot only look backwards, but must move forwards too"
Felix Bräutigam, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Marketing Officer
The launch of the Defender will include a number of different varieties of the model, appealing to a wider audience and offering models for a wide range of customer needs. With customer deliveries expected in early 2020, the testing of the Defender is in the final stages. The final product is said to be the most capable and durable off-roader in the market, boasting 70 years of innovation and improvement.
