Jaguar’s XF range started all the way back in 2007 as a replacement for the S-Type, a car that was praised for its luxurious and expensive feel upon release. However, it got worse as it aged and future reception was never kind to the S-Type series. Jaguar’s attempt to replace the old range was successful and it even became a part of the UK police force while receiving plenty of positive feedback from critics. This prompted yet another refresh in 2015 and the most recent incarnation of the series is the XF Chequered Flag Special Edition.
The latest XF range features a couple of welcome changes. It sports around 25% more fuel efficiency and much lower CO2 emissions, making it an overall more environmentally-friendly car. It also includes a few technological upgrades such as smartphone packs that are built into the 10-inch infotainment system.
In addition to the XF line update, a special edition known as the XF Chequered Flag Special Edition. It makes a handful of exterior and interior changes such as a sporty front bumper, unique badging, 18-inch alloy wheels, a spoiler on the boot and coloured side-skirts. There’s a black trim on the vehicle as well to give it a more modern and exclusive aesthetic compared to the baseline XF series, and it even comes in a choice of three different paint colours; Santorini Black, Eiger Grey and Yulong White.
Inside the XF Chequered Flag Special Edition, you’ll find that the fascia panel has been replaced with an aluminium plate. There’s unique badging on the tread plates to signify that it’s a special edition and even a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The R-Sport leather interior is also available in a choice of either Ebony or Ebony and Pimento. For optional extras, buyers can choose to replace the existing audio system in the XF with a 17-speaker system instead.
But there are some serious technological changes too. The XF Chequered Flag Special Edition gets a satellite navigation system that offers live traffic updates and keyless entry, and there’s also a head-up display and Jaguar’s Share ETA system which gives the driver parking information and even fuel pricing. You’ll also be able to choose from four different engine choices; a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol (247bhp or 296bhp) and a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel (176bhp or 237bhp). You can spec these vehicles with either rear or all-wheel drive, but the 237bhp diesel is only available in an all-wheel-drive spec.
There’s enough in the Jaguar XF Chequered Flag Special Edition to warrant the jump in price and there’s no doubt that the exterior and interior changes do reflect and celebrate Jaguar’s motorsport history. If you’re a huge fan of the Chequered Flag editions then this special edition is a sophisticated and feature-packed car with an iconic look. If you’re simply looking for more features as an upgrade to the baseline XF series then the special edition is well worth a look.
