News Six-Month MOT Extension Confirmed
From 30th March vehicle owners will be granted a six-month exemption from MOT testing.
Added: 25 March 2020
The Government has confirmed that from 30th March 2020 vehicle owners will be granted a six-month exemption from MOT testing. This new measure has been put in place to ensure that key workers and those who cannot work from home, are able to continue to travel to work, as well as allow people to shop for essentials. The extension has been granted to all cars, vans and motorcycles which usually require an MOT test from 30th March 2020. Although an MOT extension will be in place, drivers will still be expected to keep their vehicles in road worthy condition to keep them and other road users as safe as possible. Driving an unsafe vehicle is a prosecutable offence. Garages will be remaining open during this time for essential repair work only.
“We must ensure those on the frontline of helping the nation combat COVID-19 are able to do so. “Allowing this temporary exemption from vehicle testing will enable vital services such as deliveries to continue, frontline workers to get to work, and people get essential food and medicine. “Safety is key, which is why garages will remain open for essential repair work.” - Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary
The new legislation came into effect for 12 months from 30th March 2020. Until this date, drivers will still need to get their vehicle(s) tested as usual if they need to use them. However, if drivers cannot attend an MOT that’s due because of self-isolation, the Department for Transport is working with insurers and the police to ensure people are not penalised unfairly. The Government will be making regular updates to ensure all drivers are clear on the current situation. Click here to view the latest information.
